The Barton Security Agency was established in 1974 by Peter Barton as a security service to the newly emerging recreational industry in New England.

From there the business expanded to provide professional investigative services for a wide range of clients: corporations, individuals, retail, manufacturing, educational, banking, industry, and utilities.

1983 - Welcomed the creation of Southern Vermont Security Agency, specializing in outdoor and recreational security.

1994 - Northeast Security more clearly identified a workforce in the northern sections of New Hampshire and Vermont.

1998 - The Purchase of New England Investigative Services expanded the investigative services provided. Anita Bobee joined the staff as a full time employee (having worked behind the scenes for several years prior). This move also increased the number of employees serving major locations within the state of Vermont.

1999 - Backgrounds Plus was created to meet the demands for background screening services.

One fastest growing specialization is that of pre-employment screening which allows clients to identify strengths and weaknesses in the applicants they screen. This service covers the Negligent Hire Doctrine requirements as well as government contract screening for workers. Not everyone can be trusted, is able or willing to work within a strict framework of rules and regulations or can be counted on to work independently without supervision. Retention of good employees can save employers many headaches as well as money. Background screening is not limited to employment scenarios for large corporations; it can include individuals for personal care use or for volunteer screening to protect much of the "vulnerable population" who rely on this type of service for their needs.

Our staff includes many investigators with law enforcement training and expertise in a variety of specialized services including computer forensics, video and digital imaging , surveillance and data gathering.

Our investigative services handled by the private investigative division provide criminal and civil investigations, workers compensation and fraud detection to reduce or prevent the expensive pay-out of claims. Internal investigations into larcenies, embezzlement and harassment are handled in a professional manner with strict confidentiality at all times.

Security services include assessments of property, systems, policies and procedures as well as equipment, and consultation and recommendations to clients. It also includes providing on-site security services designed to meet clients' specific needs.

Biographies

PETER BARTON - Owner and Director

A Vermont native who comes from a background in law enforcement with a specialization in investigations. He joined the Vermont State Police in 1959 after receiving an honorable discharge from the U S Navy. He was selected as one of the first investigators for the newly formed BCI unit and appointed the Chief Investigator in the Vermont Attorney General's office and spent ten years conducting special investigations for that unit.

He also worked as the Investigator for the Bennington County States Attorney before becoming Chief of Police for the Town of Bennington VT. He was a Deputy Sheriff and is currently a VT Constable.
His work in the private sector included five years as Security Director at the Mount Snow resort and ski area before establishing his own business: Barton Agency. He has worked with international corporations, many domestic companies, power companies, attorneys, banking institutions, educational institutions and healthcare field.
His education and training cover all aspects of investigations, security and human resource services.
He currently holds Investigator licenses in Vermont, New Hampshire and Florida.

ANITA BOBEE - Manager

A Vermont native who comes to the private sector from a law enforcement background with a municipal police department for 31 years. Serving as a part time certified officer as well as assistant to the Chief of Police and Office Administrator . She holds an Associates Degree in Management.

She joined the Barton Agency as a part time employee in 1987, obtaining her VT private investigator license in 1990. In 1998 she took over the day to day management of cases and personnel.

Anita provides investigative services as well as specializing in background screening for pre-employment and background searching for many other client needs such as tenants, nannies, care-givers, etc.

Certified as a Professional Background Screener by the National Association of Licensed Investigators she also was a founding member of the National Association of Professional Background Screeners. Her memberships include National and State Society for Human Services, National Association of Licensed Investigators and several State Private Investigator Associations, Women Investigators and local Chambers of Commerce.

What Our Clients Say

Backgrounds Plus screens our temp force before they are offered a full time position with our company. As a result of this we have been able to make better hiring decisions based on the information provided by them. SP On her death bed my mother confessed to having had a child she gave up at birth. Because my sister had passed away at a young age I thought I had no other living relatives. Backgrounds Plus took on the challenge and after a number of months came back with the information that the young child had died within months of being adopted.
